The advent of CD and DVD storage has brought greater convenience to the task of image management. There are however, well known drawbacks. These media are not always robust during storage and may experience errors during recording, rendering data unreadable. When the recorded data consists of DICOM files and associated DICOM directory files the problem is compounded as any missing image files listed in the DICOMDIR will result in an unreadable dataset.

Data recovery must therefore take two steps:

1. Recover lost data
2. Rebuild the DICOM dataset to reflect any changes in data
